What separates "leaders" from "effective leaders"? How do effective leaders meet and exceed expectations and guide their organizations to greatness? One of the most productive ways to achieve success is to emulate the traits of those who are successful. In "The 9 Signs of Effective Leadership", Dr. Tony Bolden shares 9 common traits that effective leaders share, and challenges aspiring leaders to learn, grow, and lead.
The purpose of the qualitative phenomenological study was to identify the lived experiences of successful sales leaders in Fortune 500 organizations in the United States. The study included information gathered from in-depth interviews with a purposeful sample of 15 sales leaders to evaluate patterns and themes emerging from the data regarding competencies and critical factors that contributed to their success. The study included the use of Moustakas’s (1994) modified van Kaam methodology for data analysis with the aid of the NVivo 9 software program to analyze the collected data.
The results of the study demonstrated the emergence of nine themes that included participants’ descriptions of their common experiences with training, coaching and mentoring, skill development, their commitment to developing followers into leaders, and more. During one-on-one interviews, the study’s participants detailed their experiences as both sales people and sales leaders, and revealed the common competencies they believe contributed to their success as sales leaders. The study explores proven and shared traits from successful leaders, which if replicated could produce a higher propensity for sales success within sales teams in other organizations, even in a down economy.
